Unlimited Global Data for $9.95? We Put This Game Changing Device to a Real-World Stress Test

Man face
By Mark Peterson, Digital Nomad & Tech Nerd

How a Pocket Device Claims to End Roaming Fees in 178+ Countries

We’re all tired of unnecessary tech crammed into everything.

After reviewing hundreds of consumer tech products, I’ve learned one rule: when something sounds “too good to be true,” it usually is.

So when our team flagged Ryoko Pro,  a pocket hotspot promising unlimited data in 178+ countries with no contracts or roaming fees… skepticism was the default.

Unlimited worldwide data for $9.95?

If you travel even twice a year, the roaming savings alone can cover the cost of this device. Most US carriers charge $10 per day for international roaming. Over a two-week trip, that’s $140 before you’ve even opened your laptop.

Five members of our team tested Ryoko PRO across cafes, airports, hotels, international trips, and remote locations.

So how did it hold up?

Let’s find out.

The $2 Billion Problem Ryoko PRO Promises To Solve

But first, we need to set the scene with some context.

Last year, Americans spent an estimated $2.1 billion on international roaming charges. Meanwhile, cybersecurity firms documented over 127,000 successful attacks on public WiFi networks in major US cities alone.

We wanted to answer a straightforward question: Can a $50 portable hotspot actually replace expensive carrier roaming and eliminate the security nightmare of public WiFi?

One of our colleagues lost $3,400 to banking fraud after working from a Chicago Starbucks. Another got hit with an $847 AT&T bill after a two-week European trip. A third,  freelance designer, missed a critical client deadline when the hotel's WiFi failed during final file uploads.

At the core of all these troubles is a simple yet complex point of failure: unreliable or unsafe internet connection.

So what exactly is Ryoko PRO and does it solve this?

Unboxing And First Impressions: Smaller, Simpler, and Better Built Than Expected

Ryoko Pro is an easy-to-set-up, pocket-sized mobile hotspot, offering unlimited worldwide data for just $9.95.Up to 10 devices can connect to it simultaneously.

Supposedly, they can make their services so affordable because of the nature of their business: data purchase wholesale, and a lean, product-focused team with no mass advertising budgets or anything alike.

Now, I don’t know what I expected to arrive given its price, but it wasn’t this. And I mean it in all the best possible ways: Here’s me unboxing it:

Having reviewed hundreds of gadgets, I noticed immediately that the build quality was great.

I also knew that Ryoko is meant to be “pocketable”, but I didn’t expect it to be this lean and compact. It’s way smaller than my wallet, with a sleek design and smooth finish.

And here’s me setting it up for the first time. Let me tell you - they weren’t lying when they said that the setup is seamless:

I powered Ryoko PRO on and connected via the QR code. There are no additional steps other than this - I was already online.

Credit where credit's due: their product team really got the build quality and setup down.

However, even with this very positive first impression, I didn’t rush to think that Ryoko is great. I needed to see how it performs first, and well… here’s how it went.

A Good First Impression Isn’t Enough. How Well Does Ryoko Perform?

How We Tested Ryoko Pro in Real-World Conditions:

Each member of our team got their personal Ryoko PRO and used it throughout the festive season into 2026.

Locations:

  • 4 coffee shops (Starbucks, local cafés)
  • 2 airports (LAX, JFK)
  • 3 hotels (budget to luxury)
  • 2 remote locations (rural Montana, Colorado hiking trail)
  • Home office (comparison baseline)
  • Moving vehicle (highway road test)
  • International travel (5 days in Mexico)

EDITORIAL UPDATE: It has come to our attention that Ryoko has a fair-use policy regarding its data use. To prevent abusers, Ryoko might cap the internet speed for some of its users. Per our experience, none of our team members hit this limit.

Early Results: Reliable, Fast, and Surprisingly Stable

Since 5 members of our team have tested Ryoko PRO, we have a diverse sample of locations and use cases. From cafes to international trips and hiking trails, we attacked Ryoko Pro from all angles.

So how did it hold up?

My personal experience went great. The internet was fast; I could seamlessly connect my phone, laptop, and iPad and enjoy a reliable, smooth connection throughout the Holiday season.

And that’s only for the internet connection. What pleasantly surprised me were the ad-blocker and full-day battery life features.

I had no annoying ads while browsing and researching online, and the 8-hour battery life ensured my work remained uninterrupted throughout the day.

I must admit, though, I’m not the most active person - I’m more of an indoors person myself, so I didn’t test Ryoko on the go myself, but my colleagues have.

My nephews borrowed my Ryoko for a short skiing trip. When I asked how it worked, their answer was simply: “Dope.”

Ryoko PRO:  Streaming Sports In 4K & Interstate Traveling

All this said, my experience using Ryoko was positive. Josh, on the other hand, had a broader range of experiences.

According to him, he had some hiccups streaming shows in 4K resolution on Netflix. Ryoko didn’t perform well here, although 1080p worked flawlessly on both YouTube and streaming services like ESPN.

But let’s stay objective here: as much as I’d like to scold Ryoko here, it’s meant primarily for active people who hike a lot, or for those who travel frequently, and even for remote workers. Not for home users.

So, in its defense, home use like streaming high-resolution content, which even some dedicated home routers struggle to handle smoothly, is not what it was built for. Despite this, it can still handle it rather well.

Nevertheless, if that’s what you’re looking to do, just know that you might need to bump the resolution down a notch. High-bandwidth internet activity is definitely a concession point for this device.

Which, in fairness, isn’t a loss at all when you realize that you’re lying in your RV in rural Montana, trying to rewatch The Sopranos for the bazillionth time on HBO..

Anyway, that’s for interstate traveling and streaming content online. But how did Ryoko PRO perform internationally?

Laura’s experience will reveal this next.

International Travel & Hiking With Ryoko PRO

Our colleague Laura went to her in-laws' house in Mexico for Christmas and brought Ryoko with her.

For Laura, it was easily the best choice she could’ve made. It turns out she hadn’t opted for an international data plan with her mobile carrier, which would’ve resulted in hundreds, if not thousands, of data bill charges.

With Ryoko, she enjoyed a seamless connection and saved hundreds of dollars over the Holidays, spending just $9.95 for the unlimited data. In fact, she even told me that she already ordered her mother-in-law a Ryoko PRO too...

She did notice a peculiar thing, though: “I noticed that sometimes Ryoko got quite hot, especially if I used it for the whole day. It didn’t bother me, but maybe I wouldn’t leave it out in the sun for too long.”

High-performing tech devices getting hot is a story as old as time. For a workhorse like Ryoko, it’s nothing strange. You can think of it as a cutting-edge smartphone, and squeezing every last bit of performance out of it does make it run hotter. It’s the same for Ryoko.

The Verdict: An Imperfect, But Rarely Honest Tech Product

Truth be told, I wasn’t expecting Ryoko to be good.

It’s a “what you see is what you get” type of device, which is becoming a rarer phenomenon each day.

It offers an incredible value with no contract or roaming fees.

Meaning you can drop it whenever you wish. On top of all these compelling reasons, the device's build quality and design punch above Ryoko’s price point, too.

However, it does have its caveats. Albeit small ones, they’re worth noting.

First: Ryoko's battery can hold for quite a while (±approx 8 hours in our testing), but if you’re the type of person who looks for 24 hours or more, this device is not for you.

It’s great for travelling, but if you’re planning to camp outside for a few days without a powerbank (brave!) Ryoko won’t last that long.

The other minor issue that I wanted to emphasize is the thermals.

If you have no choice but to leave Ryoko out in the scorching sun for a long time, it may run hot. This isn't a dealbreaker, but a reminder to not leave it basking in the sun for too long.

What are my overall thoughts? Is Ryoko Pro worth it?

In my opinion, and the team’s, it’s worth it.

Even if Ryoko doubled the price,
it would still undercut most roaming charges by a wide margin.

"Finally, a way to ghost my career."

"I was tired of getting hit with 'surprise' $10/day roaming fees every time I crossed a border. I took the Ryoko Pro to Mexico last month—it cost me $9.95 for the data, and it worked the second I stepped off the plane. It’s small enough to forget in your pocket but powerful enough to keep my laptop and phone connected all day.

"The 'Conspiracy' is true: Roaming is a scam."

"After seeing how much Americans spend on roaming—over $2 billion a year—I decided to try this $50 hotspot. It’s an honest, 'what you see is what you get' device. No hidden fees, no contracts, just reliable internet. It does get a little warm if you use it for 8 hours straight in the sun, but so does my iPhone."

"The Best $50 I’ve Ever Spent on Tech."

"I usually avoid gadgets because they’re too complicated, but the Ryoko Pro is different. I just turned it on and connected via the QR code—no typing passwords or setting up accounts. It’s smaller than my wallet and fits right in my pocket.

The best part? I don't have to worry about 'bill shock' anymore. Instead of hundreds in roaming fees, I paid a flat $9.95 for unlimited data. It just works, even for someone who isn't 'good' with technology."
